The Apple III was to be the very first computer designed by Apple itself. The Apple II might have become the cornerstone of the company, but it was the creative masterpiece of Steve Wozniak, rather than the Apple company. Jobs, therefore, decided to develop the Apple III. However, the project was seized upon by the marketing team, and the machine suffered several software and hardware defects, ending up a commercial failure. The final nail in the coffin was the price tag: 3,500 US dollars, far more expensive than competing devices. The most frequent problems included system overheating, which caused the base plate to bend and the chips to fall out. Despite these troubles, the Apple III was the first machine to bear the logo of an apple with a chunk bitten out of it, and even appeared in the 1982 movie Tron. In December 1983, the Apple III+ was launched, which however failed to remedy the mediocre reputation of its predecessor, even after most of the defects and design flaws had been eradicated. Not even an ad campaign entitled ‘Let me introduce myself once again’ helped. The era of the Apple III finally came to a close in 1985 when it was withdrawn from the market.
