Obsidian is a kind of black glass. It is a volcanic rock. After the volcanic eruption, the surface layer of the liquid lava cools abruptly and becomes glass, while the rest of the material, the lower layer of the lava, crystallizes in a slow process.

In the stone and copper age, in the Aegean region, tools and weapons of hard obsidian, which originated from Milos, were constructed. The Native Americans also used obsidian for decoration, jewelry and tools.
